Eleventh Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification
The 11th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP11 UNCDD) is taking place in Windhoek from September 18th to 27th. A follow up of the Rio Conference’s Agenda 21, the Convention was adopted in Paris in 1994 and is strong of 194 states.
The French Delegation is led by Mr. Jean-Pierre Thébault, Ambassador for Environment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Eleven participants represent ministries (Foreign Affairs and Environment), scientific and development institutes and NGOs.
Ms. Monique Barbut, from France has just been designated by the UN Secretary General to be the next Executive Secretary of the Convention. She will take her office on October 1st.
Parallel to the Conference, the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre proposes a Film Festival dedicated to deserts and desertification. The French Ambassador to Namibia, Ms. Jacqueline Bassa-Mazzoni opened the Festival on September 17th, before the screening of A thirsty world by Yann Arthus-Bertrand.
